NatureServe has developed a new mid-scale ecological classification for use in conservation and environmental planning. Ecological Systems represent recurring groups of biological communities that are found in similar physical environments and are influenced by similar dynamic ecological processes, such as fire or flooding. Our classification describes over 600 upland and wetland ecological system types found in the lower 48 United States, southern Alaska, and adjacent portions of Mexico and Canada.
Current ecological systems data can be accessed on our NatureServe Explorer website. Click on the "Ecological Communities and Systems" tab.
