Editorial Production Intern

Summary of Position:
This internship is a temporary position reporting to the Senior Online Editor within the Marketing and Communications Department. The editorial production intern will assist with the preparation and publishing of online content for the production release of the LandScope America website, now in development. LandScope America a collaborative project of NatureServe and the National Geographic Society is a new online resource for the land-protection community and the public. Launching in late 2008, LandScope America will bring together maps, data, photography and information about our environment from a variety of sources and present them in dynamic and accessible formats.
Essential Job Functions:
- As directed by the LandScope Senior Online Editor, migrate prepared content from a staging environment to the production system using a content management system (CMS).
- As directed by the LandScope Senior Online Editor, harvest existing publicdomain content from various sources and maintain accurate attribution of sources for this material.
- Work with the LandScope Senior Online Editor and Partnership and Outreach Coordinator to maintain the production and acquisition schedule and to identify any content that requires formal permission requests for its use and republication.
- As needed, communicate with LandScope technicalcontent staff to prepare content for presentation in map viewer.
Required Experience & Qualifications:
- Office-related or dataprocessing experience or demonstrated proficiency with the tools.
- Excellent organizational, administrative and communications skills. Candidates must be detail-oriented and conscientious, take initiative, and work toward deadlines while working independently.
- Proficient with web browsers and MS office (or similar software).
- Experience with content management systems a plus.
Preferred Skills:
- Background in biological or ecological sciences or biodiversity conservation.
- Nonprofit, environmental, and/or conservation experience.
