TITLE: Assistant Data Manager

This position is to fill a 6 month leave of absence, a short term extension may be possible if the previous assistant data manager does not return after the 6 month period and is given an extension on the leave of absence. Details of this will be discussed during the interview and hiring process.

About Us

The mission of the AC CDC is to provide objective data and expertise about species and ecological communities of conservation concern, including those at risk, and undertake field biological inventories to support decision making, research, and education. The Atlantic CDC maintains rarity ranks for more than 14,000 species, nearly 60,000 observation records, and over 15,000 species element occurrence records.

The Corner Brook office is the Newfoundland and Labrador node of the AC CDC, which currently supports a Data Manager and Assistant Data Manager in a cost sharing agreement with the Wildlife Division, Newfoundland and Labrador Department of Environment and Conservation in Corner Brook. The AC CDC provides services to Newfoundland and Labrador clients and manages majority of the Wildlife Division's endangered species and biodiversity data. The Corner Brook office of the AC CDC works closely with the Wildlife Division and for other partners while maintaining NatureServe?s data standards. The Corner Brook office is located within the Wildlife Division?s office building at Brakes Cove. Job Description & Duties:

Primary Role: The assistant data manager will work under the supervision of the data manager in Corner Brook, NL. He/she will be responsible for carrying out data management tasks and assist the data manager in day to day activities as well as be involved in short and long term projects. The assistant data manager will help the data manager with of data requests, entry, compilation, management and database creation and other tasks as seen fit.

Secondary Role: The incumbent will also from time to time be given the opportunity to assist the Wildlife Division?s biologists with field work, surveys and other activities as needed and as they relate to the AC CDC and data management requirements. For this, experience and interest in field work as well as some plant and/or animal identification skills and knowledge are preferred.

Required Experience and Qualifications:
  • Bachelors Degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences or related field
  • Experience and/or training in Microsoft Access and Microsoft Excel
  • Experience and/or knowledge of managing relational databases
  • Experience and/or training in Geographic Information Systems (ArcGIS)
  • General computer skills
  • Good organizational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and in a team
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Biology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences or related field
  • Knowledge and interest in flora and fauna of Newfoundland and Labrador
  • Plant and/or animal identification skills
  • Experience and interest working in outdoors and in the field
  • Biotics 4 (NatureServe in house software)
  • Visual Basic for applications (Access, Excel, Word)
  • Visual Basic for ArcObjects
  • Avenue programming in ArcView
  • Oracle
  • SQL
  • Map Info
